Clever police and officers saved countless lives in Cambridgeshire last year thanks to a new smartphone app.

Since Cambridgeshire Police began using GoodSAM in October last year, officers working with CPR have saved eight lives.

Using GPS and EMS systems, the app warns of an impending heart attack in order to reduce the time between calling 999 and the arrival of paramedics.

Sergeant Chris Postil of the Digital Policing Group said: “After launching the initiative last year, we believed that saving a life would work and we made this scheme worthwhile.

“However, a year later, officers performed several successful CPRs, allowing the patient to be taken to the hospital for emergency treatment, giving him the best recovery possible.

In April, Parkside Police Department student officer Patrick Warmuz was off duty in Mildenhall when he received a call on his private phone that a man nearby was having a heart attack.

He arrives home to find the man receiving CPR from a family member, so Patrick takes over until an ambulance arrives and manages to restore the man's pulse.

Steve Campion, Illie's PC, wasn't home in May when the Goodsam app told him she was having a heart attack.

Steve started CPR and continued for about three minutes when the man started breathing, but the man stopped breathing again, so Steve continued CPR and managed to revive him a second time.

Last week, on October 11, Sergeant Ryan Hanson, an off-duty officer in Bedfordshire, received a GoodSAM alert on his phone that a heart attack had occurred 700 meters away in St Neots.

He arrived minutes after the first EMS arrived and gave them CPR, staying on site to assist the patient until he was taken to the hospital.

Pete Sharp of the Parkside Police Department received a report of a heart attack while on duty in Sutton on September 29.

He arrived to see people performing CPR on the man, so Pete took over for about 10 minutes, delivering two shocks with a defibrillator.

When emergency services arrived, the man was having difficulty breathing and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Sergeant Postil added: "The fantastic success of this scheme is a testament to the passion of our officers and their willingness to respond to requests for assistance, often while off duty."
