Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro is the best smartwatch for Android

Just like smartphones, wearables like smartwatches continue to advance even further with new models coming out every year. Before Apple announced the new Apple Watch Ultra, it took the wraps off the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro. We spent some time with the latest smartwatch from the Korean tech giant, and we really liked it.

With the introduction of the Galaxy Watch5 Pro and the latest model of the Galaxy foldable smartphone, Samsung lives up to its biggest and best motto.

It's Samsung's biggest and boldest smartwatch yet, with a starting price of $449. And while they're bulky, they can be smaller than most fitness watches. But enough about optics, is the Galaxy Watch5 Pro worth the price? Definitely if you're a fan of Android smartwatches with WearOS.

This is where the Galaxy Watch5 Pro wins.

Battery life

Under the hood is a 590mAh battery, which is significantly larger than the Galaxy Watch5's standard 410mAh battery, which explains the larger size of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. A fair deal on an awesome smartwatch battery for people with a more active lifestyle. You have no calls all day.

For this review, we're using it more as a regular smartwatch for occasional cycling and walking. Instead, the watch essentially acts as a reminder for all your Instagram posts, Twitter notifications, and emails. Mail, and thanks to the work, the Galaxy Watch5 Pro stands out for its simplicity.

To test the Watch5 Pro's battery, wearing it to sleep overnight for sleep monitoring showed that the battery could last on a single charge. I was able to get about three days of use out of the watch without a charge, which is great.

Very convenient and safe

After taking it out of the box, I quickly realized that it uses a D-clasp, or as Samsung calls it, a D Buckle sports strap; I don't know how the watch fits. When I wore the watch, I fell in love with the way it wrapped around my wrist, providing a comfortable and accurate sensor reading.

The strap is held in place by a magnetic strip, which provides a satisfactory grip when the metal clasp is attached to the magnetic strip.

I have to admit that when I first took the watch out of the box, I had a little trouble with how to wear it, but once you get your hands on it, it shouldn't be a problem anymore.

Don't miss the rotating bezel of the Galaxy Watch5 Pro

One feature of the Galaxy Watch4 that I like and makes it unique compared to other smartwatches is the rotating bezel. Gone are the edges of the Galaxy Watch5 Pro, replaced by the touch bezels found on the smaller Galaxy Watch models.

By removing the rotating bezel, you get a larger dial, which is a nice feature, as well as a sturdier design. It also has thicker dimensions, and this is also to accommodate a larger battery, again a fair trade-off for a clean and attractive screen.

WearOS runs very smoothly on the Galaxy Watch5 Pro

The new Samsung Pro model brings the flawless WearOS software that was introduced last year to Galaxy Watch4 owners.

The touch controls are clear and responsive, and they all look good on the Galaxy Watch5 Pro. The Google app works very well, which shows how successful the partnership between Google and Samsung is. I've challenged one of the top ratings on a watch just once, and it turns out to be one of the biggest issues we'll talk about shortly.

Health monitoring apps still work well and sleep tracking is impressive, but Samsung's vaunted body temperature sensor isn't quite ready to use yet.

Route planning has never been an easy experience

As mentioned above, Galaxy Watch5 Pro will appeal to the most active people thanks to the Maps function, which may be useful for those who need to track their steps on a walking or cycling route.

What sets this feature apart is how difficult it is to use the turn-by-turn navigation. You have to import the GPX file, which makes the process very cumbersome. You can opt out of Samsung's fitness app and download a GPX file from your history, but you'll be charged $60 if you use Strava's premium route builder.

There is a free version, but it can be difficult to use, so yes, it's frustrating.

The final verdict

Samsung now has the best premium Android watch on the market with the Watch5 Pro. It's an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" method for this device, and it's safe to work with some design tweaks and a few software tweaks.

At $449, it's pretty expensive, and it might scare off some Galaxy Watch5 Pro buyers into the standard Watch5, which isn't a bad thing. Also, if you decide to keep the Galaxy Watch4 Classic, you won't need to upgrade unless you want to use the turn-by-turn navigation and body temperature sensor.

That being said, the Galaxy Watch5 Pro is another great device from Samsung, and if you decide to upgrade, you won't be disappointed.
