You Can Now Buy An LG 4K 136inch MicroLED TV If You Have $300,000
LG unveiled a 136-inch 4K Micro-LED TV at this year's CDIA Expo, priced at $300,006 (approx. £262,906 / $462,658).
Dubbed a "luxury living display," Magnet uses LG's advanced Alpha 9 AI processing technology to reduce image noise and optimize color and contrast based on ambient lighting conditions.
Magnet powers the brand's WebOS smart TV platform and will support screen sharing via AirPlay 2 later this year. Meanwhile, Miracast functionality means it can wirelessly stream from any iOS, Android, Mac or Windows 10 device to the TV.
The Magnet mobile app will be available in the last quarter of 2022 and will allow users to easily organize personal photos and upload digital art directly to the screen with a collage function for viewing.
The display offers a maximum brightness of 2000 nits and has a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Connectivity includes four HDMI ports, LAN, digital output, two USB inputs and an RS232C port.
MicroLED is a new generation of TV technology that takes the best features of OLED and eliminates its weaknesses. Like OLED, each pixel is self-emissive, so one can be completely black and the ones next to it bright white or bright color, creating impressive contrast. .
But micro-LEDs can be brighter than OLEDs, which theoretically results in sharper contrast. Unlike OLED TVs ("OLED" stands for "organic light-emitting diode"), which use organic materials, micro-LEDs, being inorganic, do not deteriorate and the image is not damaged by storage or burning.
Despite its moniker, LG wants to emphasize that the technology used in Micro LED TVs is very different from conventional LED TVs. LED is a term used by brands including LG to describe an LCD TV with LED lighting.
The Magnet is LG's latest luxury micro-LED display, following the 2021 launch of the DVLED Extreme Home Theater Series, a massive 325-inch 8K screen.
Rival manufacturer Samsung produces consumer micro LED TVs. The company first demonstrated its micro LED technology at CES 2018. At 146 inches and priced at $100,000 (about £87,918 / AU$154,616) it seemed expensive at the time, but in retrospect it's a bargain compared to LG's latest offering.
Samsung announced more affordable micro LED arrays in 2021 with the 110-inch MNA110MS1 and 99-inch MNA99MS1 4K models, each rated in the six figures and requiring professional installation. Although a 76-inch version was promised, the company decided in 2016 to introduce 89-inch and 101-inch screens in 2022. Pricing for these smaller models is yet to be confirmed, but will start at around $80,000 (around £72,540 / USD 123,692).
The new LG MicroLED Magnetic Display is available exclusively at LG distributors, including Bang and Olufsen stores in the US. LG has partnered with Danish audio brand Beolab 90 to connect its speakers to TVs, which LG sells through stores.
"Together with BeoLab 90, LG Mangit delivers one of the most immersive home theater experiences ever," said Michael Kosla, vice president of LG Electronics USA. LG also offers TV pairings with a wide range of Bang & Olufsen home theater speakers, including the Biolab 50 and 28 models.
