I've reviewed all the major smartphones released in 2022 None of them impacted my daily life as much as a year-old smartwatch

I've used all the new flagship phones from Apple, Samsung and Google this year and they're awesome! But they are also boring. This is impressive software engineering and ingenuity, but it's mostly incremental improvements. And none of them changed my daily life until I finally got a smartwatch.

I know that. I am a very late adopter. Even when friends have been shopping me for the last...er, decade...I didn't think the smartwatch life was for me. Why give your phone another way to get your attention? Also, my phone and I were fine and I didn't want to introduce another technology into the relationship.

Then I had a son. Suddenly, I felt like I always carried a baby or several bags of babies with me, or both at the same time. Being hands-free enough to check a message on my phone has become a luxury. Things get complicated when he starts moving on his own. I kept the phone in my back pocket as I chased him from room to room, but had to pull it out every time I sat with him because he was looking for a new choking hazard. Then a few times later I have to remember to grab it when we walk into another room and do it again for what feels like forever. It was getting tiring. So I decided to try the Apple Watch Series 7.

The most obvious thing I learned about wearing a smartwatch is that it frees you from your phone. I know that. This is the general basis of smartwatches. But how much I loved putting my phone on the dining room table that night and not worrying about missing an important notification. I can listen to music on Spotify through the smart speaker on the kitchen counter while building a block tower in the living room. I can wake up to a vibrating alarm clock on my wrist without disturbing the child in the next room. As I drive and drink coffee, I can confirm the possibility of rain for the next few hours.

If you're also late and interested in a smartwatch, this is a special year to skip the phone update and spend the money on a watch instead. Dan Seifert, associate editor of The Verge , recently explained why 2022 is a good year for smartwatches and a chance for phones to win. That's generally true: Samsung, Apple and Google all announced watches this fall, so no matter your phone brand, you'll find new options. Whether you imagine yourself to be a famous athlete, a diver or a monocle, super rich, there is probably a watch for you.

For me, embracing the life of a smartwatch feels like being in control of my phone. I no longer need it on my person. In addition, the health monitoring is very good. In fact, I look forward to checking my sleep stats in the morning and enjoying a data-backed good night's sleep, something I've taken for granted since I've been breastfeeding again. I ended up taking credit for all the steps my son took in chasing him around the house (I was a gifted and talented kid, so I have an unhealthy relationship with external validation).

Maybe next year's phones will come with more impressive feature updates, but right now I have this year's best tech update on my wrist.
