It 's one of the slower weeks in politics as our elected leaders head into the Thanksgiving holiday, when they have a chance to assess the implications of their surprising midterm results and think about a way forward. will continue.

This is certainly a confusing topic. There was no red wave, but the Republicans took back the House. The anti-Trump coalition that returned Pelosi to the presidency in 2018 and elected Biden in 2020 appears to have held up against Democrats, but the biggest gains for Republicans have come among college-educated suburban women and black and Latino voters. We've heard for years that politics is becoming more nationalized, in part because of the decline of local news and the rise of national partisan cable networks, but many midterm races have turned into local issues or candidates. Ticket distribution has been said to be dead, but it was one of the most striking features of the November 8 polls.

Identify some key trends found in the 2022 results that tell us a lot about 2024:

- Blue countries are getting bluer. ( See Governor Gavin Newsom's re-election in California or what's happening in Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts and Washington.)
- Fewer voters in fewer states are likely to decide the next presidential election .
Both presidential candidates could start 2024 with 46 states and a bipartisan election DC Brownstein claims that, based on recent trends, a Democrat could start with 260 and a Republican with 235 valid electoral votes. In this scenario, long-term battlefield states turn red or blue. With Michigan and Pennsylvania seemingly back in Democratic hands, Florida and Ohio controlled by the GOP, sometimes blue North Carolina out of reach for Democrats, and the GOP constantly targeting New Hampshire out of reach for Republicans, the real draw may be 43 electoral votes.
