Buy the Right Samsung Smartwatch for Your Needs

Samsung smartwatches cover every corner of the market, from style and convenience to activity tracking and smartwatch functionality. We've rounded up five Samsung devices that offer consumers the best value for money.

The best Samsung smartwatches

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5: The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is the best Samsung smartwatch you can buy. It offers the same health and fitness tracking technologies as the previous generation, plus a stronger build, a better battery, and several new gadgets for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts.
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series. If you value value and don't mind old technology, the Galaxy Watch 4 series is still a good choice. It also works with the latest version of Wear OS.
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 3: The best Tizen-powered smartwatch is the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3. It's an efficient smartwatch with great activity tracking capabilities.
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2: The Galaxy Watch Active 2 is Samsung's best budget smartwatch. It does a great job of balancing smartwatch and fitness features at a great price.
  • Samsung Galaxy Fit 2: Samsung's best fitness tracker is the Galaxy Fit 2. This entry-level tracker is unlike any of its peers, but it's a great start for those entering the wearable market.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Series 5: Samsung's best smartwatches

The Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro are the best smartwatches Samsung has to offer. Both pay homage to the previous generation with small but significant improvements. However, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro offers a particularly large battery, even longer battery life, and some unique features.

Let's start with the fact that both new models are equipped with sapphire glass displays. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has been upgraded from the base model with a titanium case and thick sapphire crystal. Unfortunately, there are no rotating bezels on the watch, but the appearance of both models is sleek and stylish. You get the same health and fitness trackers we love on the Galaxy Watch Series 4. In testing, we found the Series 5 to offer slightly improved heart rate data, which Samsung attributes to better sensors and better performance. We especially liked Samsung's new D-buckle strap with raised metal buckle. This harness is ready to use with the Pro model only, not the base model.

The Pro model has a much larger battery, providing up to 20 hours of battery life in GPS mode (although we didn't touch those numbers during our testing). Both models come with new charging cables that can charge your device from zero to 45% in 30 minutes. Finally, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro adds new navigation improvements for hikers, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts only. These include tracking to explore new areas and sharing GPX files to share favorite trails.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4: The cheapest version of Wear OS is still on sale

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic on a table.

Jimmy Westenberg / Android Authority

At launch, the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic were arguably the best Wear OS smartwatches, along with Google's then-new Wear OS 3 One UI Watch. The devices lead the lineup of the new Galaxy Watch 5 and 5 Pro. However, this older generation is still a strong lineup to consider if you're looking to save money. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is also Samsung's best smartwatch if you have a racing heart.

Both the Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic come in small and large sizes and have optional LTE versions. The wearable features a redesigned design with a new strap attachment system, screen sizes ranging from 1.19 to 1.36 inches and bright AMOLED displays. Both models look great on the wrist, and their displays are bright, colorful, and inviting. They include several advanced fitness tracking features, including body composition tracking, which we found very useful. We were pleasantly surprised by the much improved heart rate monitoring. In addition, users get ECG and SpO2 sensors, though some features can only be used with a paired Samsung smartphone.

While Wear OS 3 makes significant improvements to the user experience, including Google Assistant, the Galaxy Watch 4 has some limitations and lags behind in key areas. In our test, we found that the GPS accuracy is not outstanding. In addition, battery life is short for a smaller model, and charging is very slow. However, the line as a whole is fantastic. Now they can often be found on sale.

Samsung and Google have teamed up to improve the status of Android smartwatch software. The result is the new Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, which run on the new, co-developed Wear OS operating system. The regular Galaxy Watch 4 is for sports fans, while the Watch 4 Classic is for those who want to wear a watch to the office.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3: the best Samsung smartwatches with Tizen

A Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 displays a user's running workout stats including pace, duration, and heart rate.

Jimmy Westenberg / Android Authority

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 is still the best smartwatch of 2022, even if it doesn't run the latest and greatest software. As the successor to the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, this device has a sharp display and a comfortable rotating bezel (did we mention how much we love this device?). It's also the best option for Tizen fans who don't want to upgrade to Wear OS 3.

For starters, the Galaxy Watch 3 offers a solid smartwatch experience. This device looks great on the wrist, and we love customizing it with a variety of watch faces, both in-house and third-party. The two-day battery life is not bad compared to, for example, the Apple Watch. We also found some advanced running aids and are happy with what the device has to offer in terms of sleep tracking, especially sleep scores.

However, this top of the review is not without flaws. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3's sensor isn't built with precision. In other words, if fitness tracking is a key feature for you, you might be better off spending your money elsewhere. Plus, you won't find as many apps on Tizen as you do on Wear OS.

  • Useful sleep monitoring and ideas

  • The GPS and HR sensors may be faulty.
  • There are no charges for MST with Samsung Pay.
  • The installation process is problematic for non-Samsung phones.
  • It does not support third party software

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2: Samsung's best budget smartwatches

A user models a Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 watch face on his wrist.

Smart watch Samsung Galaxy Active 2

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 is an attractive smartwatch from Samsung that can currently be found for just a few hundred euros. Unlike the Galaxy Watch 3, it has a thin, tactile bezel with a slightly curved glass dial and multiple strap options. Galaxy Watch 4 is a direct continuation of this device (this can be seen from the sporty look).

Prior to the release of the Galaxy Watch 4, the Active 2 was Samsung's best fitness and sleep tracking smartwatch. It doesn't mean he's the best, but he was the best and quite strong. If you are an athlete looking for absolute precision, we simply do not recommend this device. Instead, the Active 2 is for buyers who want to save some money without sacrificing too many features. It also includes LTE support, making it a great option for streaming music at the gym or while running.

Of course, falling prices have an effect. First, basic health metrics like heart rate monitoring are unreliable, and device blood pressure monitoring is definitely rock bottom. If you don't need intensive monitoring, this smartwatch is great. More importantly, these are Samsung's best budget smartwatches.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 is a product that proves that Samsung listens to its users. The touch frame really improves the overall experience, and there's now LTE connectivity for those who need it. Overall, this is a good all-round smart watch.

  • ~ 2 days battery life
  • Awesome sleep tracks

FROM...

  • There are no charges for MST with Samsung Pay.
  • The Tizen app ecosystem is still missing compared to Wear OS
  • The heart rate, GPS, and altimeter sensors may vibrate.
  • The installation process still needs work

Samsung Galaxy Fit 2: Samsung's best fitness tracker

Galaxy Fit 2 is a reliable and affordable fitness tracker. It replaces the Galaxy Fit's physical button for a more comfortable touch, which is a good move in our book. This greatly simplifies navigation through menus and viewports.

It also covers all the basics of physical activity tracking, from stress and sleep tracking to heart rate monitoring. The latter is questioned, but not always. The Galaxy Fitness 2 lacks the style of traditional smartwatches, but considering the price, that's not a problem. In fact, some users may prefer the smaller form factor.

While we wouldn't recommend using it for marathon training, it's a solid entry-level device and a handy introduction to the Samsung smartwatch ecosystem. On the one hand, it doesn't offer the same good experience in this competitive field, but it's still the best viewfinder Samsung has to offer.
