Android Police Awards 2022: Our Favorite Phone, Smartwatch, Tablet, And More
As we approach 2022, the Android Police team looks back on years in search of tools to assess the best technologies that will be brought to us this year. We've had the chance to test hundreds of amazing new devices over the past 12 months, and we've rounded up our favorites in a variety of categories.
The first half of the year saw some big breakthroughs in technology, with OnePlus surprising us with its first major phone launch this year, followed by the Samsung Galaxy S22 series at the end of February. Then Google I/O surprised us with the first sample of the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel Watch series, but we weren't able to test these devices for several years. The popularity of foldable phones has grown globally, with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 dominating the US, while foldable versions from Honor, Xiaomi, Motorola and other brands have popped up in other countries.
We've spent thousands of hours testing the best and, frankly, worst consumer tech devices money can buy, so we've rounded up the 12 best options in a variety of categories, including smartphones, tablets , Chromebooks, portable devices, etc. . . , headphones and more. Let's start with the prize of the year: smartphones.
Best smartphone: Google Pixel 7 Pro
Our pick of the best smartphones of 2022 is the best Pixel money can buy. Last year we chose the Pixel 6 over the Pixel 6 Pro, but this year we think the premium phone deserves our highest honor. The design hasn't changed much from the Pixel 6 series, but the improvements we're getting are part of what sets the Pixel 7 Pro apart. As always the camera is fantastic, this time with the new Tensor G2 chipset it does it all, and we like that the Pro model includes 12GB of RAM. If you're looking for the best Android phone of 2022, the Google Pixel 7 Pro is the one for you.
Google Pixel 7 Pro
The Google Pixel 7 Pro improves on the Pixel experience after the initial failure of the 6 Pro last year, improving stability and taking camera capabilities to the next level with the integration of 4K60fps video and images on all cameras. 30W fast charging and cool Pixel features like automatic call detection and Pixel Recorder make the Pixel 7 Pro a compelling phone, even if it needs an upgrade.
Winner: Google Pixel 7
Google Pixel 7
Google didn't reinvent the wheel with the Pixel 7, but it doesn't have to. With an improved camera, next-gen Tensor G2 chipset, and impressive feature-rich software, the Google Pixel 7 beats the price again this year.
Best budget phone: Google Pixel 6a
The Google Pixel 6a is the undisputed king of budget phones in 2022, scoring 9 out of 10 in our review. It's great that Google can offer a cheaper alternative to its flagship Pixel series, and if you don't like the high-end smartphones on the market, you'll probably be happy with the Pixel 6a. The Google Tensor chipset and 6GB of RAM mean you have a powerful device, the 6.1 inch screen is bright and beautiful, the camera is excellent and the battery life is great. If you're looking for a new budget smartphone, the Pixel 6a is our top pick.
Google Pixel 6a
The Pixel 6a isn't just the best smartphone $450 can buy. It is probably the best Android phone with a good camera, good performance and great software.
Finalist: OnePlus N20 5G
OnePlus N20 5G
OnePlus has lost its reputation with Android fans in recent years, but the company is still making a mid-budget phone. The Nord N20 5G costs $299, but it still packs a punch thanks to the Snapdragon 695 chipset and six gigabytes of RAM. Battery life is amazing – in our review, the Ryne managed to get 10 hours of screen time over three days on a single charge.
Best gaming phone: Asus ROG Phone 6
If you're looking for a gaming phone in the US in 2022, your options are unfortunately very limited. Luckily, when you get the best, you don't need the others, and that's exactly what happens with the Asus ROG Phone 6. Highlights are long battery life, plenty of power and stunning forward-facing stereo speakers. This year, he took us to the top of the rankings. It's not a cheap option, but if you're looking for the best mobile gaming experience to play Apex Legends: Mobile or League of Legends: Wild Rift, you should consider the Asus ROG Phone 6.
ASUS ROG Phone 6
The Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro is one of the best gaming phones money can buy, and it's built to handle all the tough tasks you can throw at it. Of course, the lightning-fast Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset gives you the power and performance you need to take on your friends, while the large 6.78-inch 1080p 165Hz display ensures your gaming experience is as smooth, crisp and smooth as possible. Why...
Finalist: Redmagic 7
Radmagia 7
If you don't want to spend big bucks on your next gaming phone, check out the RedMagic 7. Sure, it might be a bit older than the 7s Pro, with stock Snapdragon 8. Gen 1, but it's still pretty cool. It's still an incredibly powerful chip, which means the RedMagic 7 plays games brilliantly without any performance issues. .
Best tablet: Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Plus
After some strange years for Android tablets, 2022 will bring us many new things. Most of them come from Samsung-branded Android tablets, with the company's Galaxy Tab S8 Plus taking home the tablet of the year award. The 12.4-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate makes watching movies or YouTube videos a pleasure, and the design is sleeker than previous iterations of Samsung's high-end tablets. It's not cheap, but it can do more than most Android tablets on the market, which is why it won the title of the best tablets of 2022.
Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus Tab
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Plus is one of the best Android tablet options out there, with a high-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor that does all the heavy lifting and a 12.4-inch display with 2800 x 1752 resolution and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Speed to enjoy. Watch movies and more. The design is sleek and you get an S Pen with the tablet. Best smartwatch: Samsung Galaxy Watch 5
The year the long-awaited Pixel Watch finally arrived, we didn't expect the Galaxy Watch 5 to have that name at first. While this smartwatch is essentially the same as the Galaxy Watch 4, Samsung's improvements are significant, especially if you're upgrading from older smartwatches. The Watch 5's sapphire crystal is more scratch-resistant than the glass on the previous model, and the battery is larger. Small improvements like these make it one of our best smartwatches.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 5
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is an upgraded version of the award-winning Watch 4. Sapphire crystal makes Samsung's new wearables even more durable, and its large battery makes it easy to get through the day on a single charge.
Finalist: Google Pixel Watch
Google Pixel Watch
We've been waiting for Google to make watches for the better part of a decade, and the Google Pixel Watch is finally here. Fitbit's first Android smartwatch comes with health tracking, and Wear OS 3.5 brings Google's wearable user experience and Wear OS apps exclusively to services like Google Home.
Best headphones: Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony has become the market leader in ANC headphones and they have overtaken it with their latest release. The Sony WH-1000XM5 aren't a game changer for the company's latest pair of headphones, but the updated design and added features enhance what Sony has to offer. "With industry-leading sound, ANC, and long battery life with ANC for up to 30 hours of high-quality play, they're the best choice for anyone in the market," says Taylor Kearns, publisher of Android Police Gadgets, in his review. ." . The ultimate. Noise canceling headphones." Our main criticism is that it doesn't add a new design, but if you don't mind that, it's a great choice.
Sony WH-1000XM5
The active voice cancellation champion is in no rush to give up his crown. Sony's latest pair of headphones, the WH-1000XM5, bring class-leading ANC that many have tried and failed to match. The headphones deliver good sound quality that isn't too bright or colorful like Bose headphones, so you can enjoy your concert or your favorite track at 98 degrees.
Finalist: Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless
Sennheiser Momentum 4 wireless
The Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless is a good option for those who don't want to pay extra for high-quality wireless sound; It seems very good. Battery life is incredible, with up to 60 hours of noise cancellation on a single charge. However, that ANC isn't particularly impressive compared to similarly priced options from Bose or Sony.
Best headphones: Google Pixel Buds Pro
Google Pixel Buds Pro are the best headphone option to pair with your Android phone Google has a long history with headphones, but 2022 was the year the company finally did it. As we said in our review, "fourth time is a charm", we think that sums up Google's history in this area. The Pixel Buds Pro feature ANC, HD mode, much improved touch controls, and most importantly, good sound quality.
Google Pixel Buds Pro
With great sound, ANC, and a stunning Clarity mode, the Pixel Buds Pro deliver premium headphones that haven't been seen in Google's previous efforts. If you're an Android user and can spend $200 on a headset, this is a great choice.
Finalist: Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro and Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II
Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro
The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are Samsung's smallest, lightest and best wireless headphones. They improve on the Galaxy Buds Pro in every way: better sound quality, more comprehensive active noise cancellation, and support for 24-bit audio. They are also protected against dust and water according to the IPX7 standard.
Bose Quiet Comfort II Headphones
The Bose QuietComfort II headphones aren't cheap at $299, but with good sound quality and ANC, you can go along with what you get in in-ear headphones. If you're looking for premium headphones, the QC Earbuds II should be on your radar.
Best Chromebook: HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook
Dragonfly is a name synonymous with speed, lightness and reliability - three qualities that excel in the HP Chromebook Elite Dragonfly. Google may never make another Pixelbook, but the Dragonfly is the closest we'll get in a very, very long time. It's surprisingly thin, with a comfortable keyboard and a nice screen. Both 450nit 2K and 1000nit 1080p touchscreens are available, giving us a Chromebook you can use outdoors in direct sunlight if you want. While the list price is hard to pin down, HP is slowly starting to offer the discounts you deserve. While you might expect those deals, this is the best Chromebook currently on the market.
The HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook
Thin, sleek, and powerful, HP's first Dragonfly Chromebook can be equipped with an Intel i7 processor, up to 32GB of RAM, and a stunning 13.5-inch touchscreen. While this laptop might be pricey when it comes to deals, it's the best Chromebook money can buy.
