Ranches Of The Future Could Be Home To Cows Wearing Smartwatchstyle Sensors Powered By Their Movements

Using smart technology to monitor animal health, reproduction, environment and environmental conditions will help food security and supply chain efficiency, but this monitoring will increase energy costs for high emissions. To combat this, researchers published in the journal iScience on December 1 have developed a smart wearable for cows that captures the kinetic energy generated by small movements and enables smart ranch technology.

"Monitoring animal health and environmental data on farms can help prevent disease and improve grazing and management efficiency," said Zhutao Zhang, an energy researcher at Southwest Jiaotong University in China. "This information can include oxygen concentration, air temperature and humidity, exercise level, reproductive cycle, disease and milk production."

In the team's smart farm design, cows wear small sensors on their ankles and necks that track the cows during their normal farm activities. "There is a large amount of kinetic energy that can be stored in the daily activities of cattle, such as walking, running and neck movement," said Yajia Pan, an energy researcher at Southwest Jiaotong University. Once captured, the energy is stored in a lithium battery and used to power the device.

"Our kinetic energy harvester specifically collects kinetic energy from weak motions," Zhang said. The device's design is unique in that it incorporates a speed-boosting mechanism that uses magnets and a pendulum to amplify the cow's small movements.

Zhang hopes that applying smart technology to farms is part of a larger effort to improve the world's food system. "With the development of 5G technology and the Internet of Things, the entire industrial chain operations of the food system are more intelligent and transparent," he said.

Zhang and his colleagues tested the devices on humans and found that a simple runner was enough for the device to measure temperature. The researchers see future applications in sports tracking, healthcare, smart homes and building wireless human sensor networks.

"Kinetic energy is everywhere in the environment: the movement of leaves in the wind, the movement of people and animals, the waves, the rotation of the earth, all these phenomena have a lot of kinetic energy," Zhang said. t. Don't waste this energy."
