LG Teases 2023 OLED TV That Boosts Screen Brightness By Up To 70%
Ahead of the big consumer technology show CES 2023 in Las Vegas, LG has clarified some of the details of its newer older spec OLED TVs. (I'll be there to see them in action.) One of the standout models will be the successor to the best high-end TV for the money, the C3, as well as the brighter G3.
The biggest difference between LG's current OLED TVs and the new ones is the G3's higher brightness. New lighting control architectures and light enhancement algorithms increase brightness by up to 70% on the 55", 65", and 77" G3 models.
OLED TVs offer better overall picture quality than other high-end TVs and are bright enough for most lighting conditions in my experience. Still, all the brightness helps, especially in bright rooms and HDR TV shows and movies, and the G3 can match or exceed the light output of Sony and Samsung's QD-OLED models. They still can't come close to mini LED TVs like the Samsung QN90B and Hisense U8H , which can be twice as bright as OLED TVs. LG doesn't mention higher brightness for other models, including the C3.
None of the other upgrades that LG sells are important to me. The TVs have a new "α9 AI Gen6 processor", but it was hard to find better processing in my previous tests. The company has also given the G3 a design that fits better than before against the wall, leaving no "visible gaps" when attached to the wall. The company's hated Smart TV system has been redesigned to add better categories, personalized recommendations, and "hot content selection".
LG also says its 2023 OLED TVs will be the first to be HDMI-certified for Fast Media Switching VRR, which could "eliminate the 'instant black screen' that occurs when switching between playing content from different source devices connected to the TV. » Ports that support HDMI 2.1a. This (again minor) feature is for video playback, not gaming, and requires a QMS-VRR source device, such as the soon-to-be-supported Apple TV 4K .
In recent years, LG's OLED TVs, especially the "C" models, have offered the best picture quality for the price of high-end TVs, and I expect the C3 to fight for that honor. However, the LG C2 2022 is still the favorite and the improvements made so far don't seem significant enough to recommend waiting for the C3.
LG hasn't announced the exact size, price, or availability of its 2023 OLED TV, though the G3 and Z3 will certainly cost more than the C3. Typically, the company doesn't announce pricing for its TVs until they go on sale in the spring. In the meantime, I can't wait to hear more about the CES launch in the coming days, as well as hands-on impressions of the new models.
